Cover Art differs from traditional illustrations in a few major ways. Covers will typically be much more detailed and polished than a standard painting, have a very specifically engineered layout design focused on drawing customers to your product and then leading them into it, and most importantly it should represent a visual statement about the product. Often times the typical illustration does not allow for these things, but a cover has a big job, and you need that extra grab to catch eyes.
The above sample covers show a decent variety in style and genre and also demonstrate a variety of degrees of detail and realism within the style differences. Most of Harsh's work is in the fantasy, sci-fi, and supers genres within the RPG Hobby Industry so a good deal of the covers end up on books, suppliments, or even .pdf publications and need to be eye-catching to compete with the sea of other products out there. These samples above also range over about three years or so with the majority of them being completed within the last year. |
